The Uninhabited Island
Klein Bonaire is a small, flat, uninhabited island approximately 800 metres off the coast of Kralendijk — a protected nature reserve within the Bonaire National Marine Park with no development, no facilities, no freshwater, and no shade beyond what you bring. What it does have is Bonaire’s finest coral reef, the clearest water on the island (visibility often exceeds 40 metres), pristine white sand beaches, and the sense of being on a genuinely untouched Caribbean island.
The reef surrounding Klein Bonaire is in exceptional condition — the island’s uninhabited status means no runoff, no pollution, and no anchor damage (anchoring is prohibited — boats use fixed moorings). The coral coverage, the fish density, and the turtle population are noticeably richer than even the well-protected main island reef.
How to Visit
Water taxi from Kralendijk — small boats run regular crossings (approximately 15 minutes) and collect you at an agreed time. The most affordable and flexible access.
Boat tours and snorkelling trips — many of the island’s boat operators include a Klein Bonaire stop as part of their half-day or full-day tour. The combination of Klein Bonaire snorkelling and a coastal cruise is the most popular boat-based experience on Bonaire.
Kayak crossing from the main island (approximately 800 metres) for fit paddlers in calm conditions.
Sailing and catamaran cruises typically include a Klein Bonaire anchor for snorkelling and beach time.
What to Bring
Everything. Klein Bonaire has no facilities — no shops, no water, no shade structures, no toilets. Bring drinking water (at least 2 litres per person), sun protection (shade is limited to a few small trees), food if you plan to stay for more than a snorkelling session, snorkelling equipment, and a bag for your rubbish (leave nothing on the island).
Your marine park tag. Required for entering the water at Klein Bonaire.
Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest. The reef around Klein Bonaire is pristine — protect it by avoiding chemical sunscreen in the water.
